How Grants Impact People's Lives

Approximately $700 billion in federal grants will be awarded this year. The real story, however, is not the total dollars, but the impact those dollars will have on people's lives. Public Service Recognition Week - Thank You! Thank You!  Thank You!

Since 1985, the first Sunday in May starts off what has been officially designated by Congress as Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW), a time to honor those who work in local, state, and federal government. Organized by the Public Employees Roundtable, events range from a Congressional breakfast and a 5K run/walk in Washington, DC, to school children all over the county meeting the people who make their town councils tick. National or local, small or large, black tie required or blue jeans recommended, to capture the spirit of PSRW, a commemoration only needs one ingredient to be successful, a genuine appreciation for America's hardworking public servants.

Matching Funds Required:  Outsmarting a Catch-22

It takes money to make money.  Who hasn't lived this fatalistic cliche at some point in their lives?  Big salaries require expensive degrees, but expensive degrees require fat financing.  We need a car to get to work but we need a job to buy a car.  It is no different in local government.  Many of the cash strapped municipalities that  could benefit the most from grants are discouraged from applying because of the matching funds requirement.  While the challenge can be daunting, meeting it is not impossible.  Hidden escape hatches do exist in this particular catch-22, here are some suggestions where to look for them.

Evidence-Based Practices for Local Government:  Increasing Your Comfort Level

Do you ever wonder why studies are always canceling each other out? One week we hear that a low-fat diet helps reduce the risk of heart disease and then another study comes and contradicts those findings. It does! It doesn’t! It does...The media reports polar opposite results on almost every topic imaginable. Among all this confusion, we offer the following white paper to help you peek inside the research process. Beyond the sheer frustration of never knowing what to believe, learning a bit about how research works is a new necessity for grant seekers as evidence-based practices are increasingly required by both public and private agencies. Grant makers want to fund what works, and the burden of proof is on grant recipients to show the dollars they received are being put to good use.
