The NSF’s Community College Innovation Challenge will provide two prizes to teams of students from community colleges that innovate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)-based solutions to real-world problems. Projects should fall under one of three themes: Maker to Manufacturer, Energy and Environment, or Security Technologies. The first-place prize will be $1,500 per student team member, and the second-place prize will be $1,200 per student team member. All projects must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. ET on February 15, 2017.
HUD is holding a series of webinars for the funding agency’s Continuum of Care (CoC) Collaborative applicants and providers, Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) recipients and subrecipients, and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) award recipients. Webinars will educate participants about the requirements of the Equal Access Rule and the Gender Identity Rule, as well as how to ensure that projects operate in compliance with these rules. Webinars are currently scheduled for November 14, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET; November 16, 2016, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET; and November 17, 2016, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET. The OJP’s Diagnostic Center is a technical assistance resource designed to provide local leaders with customized training and technical assistance (TTA) in addressing persistent and emerging public safety problems using evidence-based strategies. The center helps communities invest in what works by bridging the gap between data and justice policy at the state, city, county, and tribal levels. Assistance from the center may be requested by email, phone, or submitting an online request.
The U.S. Department of Education’s EDSIM Challenge seeks next-generation education simulations that strengthen academic, technical, and employability skills. The department is most interested in immersive and engaging simulations that include clearly defined learning goals and build diverse skill sets. All interested parties may submit an idea. Ideas will be reviewed by a panel of judges who will select finalists to compete for the final awards. One grand-prize winner will receive $430,000, and five finalists will receive $50,000. All ideas must be submitted online by 4:59 p.m. on January 17, 2017.
The AASL’s Innovative Reading Grant program will provide $2,500 to support the planning and implementation of a unique and innovative program for children that motivates and encourages reading, especially with struggling readers. Applicants must be personal members of the funding agency, and online applications must be submitted by February 1, 2017.
IHCDA has teamed up with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to present a training session on the Environmental Review and Section 106 Historic Review Process. The training session will be provided to participants for free, and will be held on November 9, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. The training session will be held at the funding agency’s headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. Interested parties must register online to attend.
The Virginia DOE is announcing professional development opportunities to assist middle and high school teachers and counselors in helping students prepare for and make informed decisions about education, career, and debt. The assistance will be provided at no charge, and will help participants support students in decision making, self-investment, choosing a path after graduation, choosing a college and a major, paying for higher education loans, and managing money/controlling debt. Training sessions will be held between November 15, 2016, and March 16, 2017, on various Virginia university campuses.
Oklahoma Humanities will provides grants of $500 each to scholars who are residents of Oklahoma or are employed in Oklahoma, including independent scholars with or without academic affiliation, to support research taking place between December 15, 2016, and October 15, 2017. Funding will be provided for research that deals with the themes of The Human Experience, We the People, and The Public Square. Applications must be submitted online by December 15, 2016.
CDE’s Transition Leadership Institute will be held on June 8-9, 2017, in Keystone, Colorado. The institute will be dedicated to supporting transition planning and building capacity to improve post-school outcomes for students with disabilities. Aside from content-rich learning sessions, teams from all over the state will also come together to learn, plan, network, and share their experiences. Registration for the conference will open on February 1, 2017.
VTC’s Music Festival Sponsorship Program aims to help promote the growth of and offset the cost incurred by Virginia music festivals, as well as build Virginia’s brand as a music destination. Applications are open to all established, non-startup music festivals. Up to $5,000 will be provided to smaller festivals with attendance of under 5,000, and up to $15,000 will be provided for multiday festivals with attendance of more than music destination.
