FEMA’s highly competitive Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant opportunity is just around the corner: The application submission window is July 16-August 10, 2012.
About the Program
The purpose of this program is to assist local fire departments with staffing and deployment capabilities in order to better respond to emergencies, as well as to ensure that communities have adequate protection from fire hazards. Funding will be available to increase the number of frontline firefighters, rehire laid-off firefighters, retain firefighters facing imminent layoffs, or fill positions vacated by attrition.
Under this solicitation, eligible applicants are volunteer and combination fire departments; career fire departments are eligible for the hiring of firefighters only. Local and statewide organizations that represent the interests of volunteer firefighters are eligible to apply for recruitment and retention activities only. Municipalities and fire districts may apply on behalf of fire departments lacking the legal status to do so. More information on eligible and ineligible entities can be found on pages 4-6 and 9-10 of the SAFER program guidance. The full summary of the program can be found in Grants Network: US4399.
How Can eCivis Help?
For the FY 2011 grant cycle, FEMA received 1,975 SAFER applications; though the agency is still announcing awards, only 211 applications, or 10.5 percent, have been funded for the year to date. Having other grant professionals on your side can help you prepare a winning application to secure these highly competitive funds.
If your city or fire department is interested in applying for this SAFER grant opportunity and seeks assistance (whether with mock peer review or grant writing), contact Dr. Bev Browning and her team at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at (877) 232-4847, option 1. The FEMA application process is Dr. Bev's specialty.
