Grant award announcements for late May and early June 2014

Here's a recap of some recent federal and foundation grant award announcements, provided here with the help of the eCivis Research Department.

U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Security Challenge Area Program

The USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) announced $6 million in grants to support education, research, and an extension efforts to increase food security and improve food production. Read more about the program, and check out the awardee project descriptions.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Comprehensive Housing Counseling Program

More than $40 million in HUD grants will go to hundreds of national, regional, and local organizations to help families and individuals with their housing needs and to prevent future foreclosures. HUD’s housing counseling grants, and the additional funding they help to leverage, will assist more than 1.5 million households find housing, make more informed housing choices, or keep their current homes. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Brownfields Program

The EPA announced that 171 communities will receive 264 grants totaling $67 million in brownfields funding to clean and redevelop contaminated properties, boost local economies, and leverage jobs while protecting public health and the environment. The FY2014 Brownfields Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup (ARC) grants will give communities and businesses a chance to return economic stability to underserved and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods through the assessment and clean-up of abandoned industrial and commercial properties, places where environmental clean-ups and new jobs are most needed. Blackstone Charitable Foundation’s Veterans Hiring Initiative

The foundation announced grant awards of $50,000 each (totaling $300,000) to six organizations that support veterans’ employment and business development. Read the announcement.

U.S. National Endowment for the Arts: The Big Read

The NEA announced that 77 nonprofit organizations will receive grants totaling more than $1 million to host a Big Read project between September 2014 and June 2015. Under the program, organizations will develop unique programming that will provide their communities with the opportunity to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 36 selections from U.S. and world literature. Wells Fargo’s Environmental Solutions for Communities Program

Wells Fargo & Company and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) recently announced awards totaling $3 million to 54 community-based environmental organizations to help support land and water conservation and energy efficiency. Read more.
